La chaleur d'un volcan en frontière de plaques

Le champ hydrothermal de Lucky Strike couvre 1 km2 au sommet d'un des volcans de la dorsale Médio-Atlantique, à la frontière des plaques Afrique et Amérique du Nord. Les fluides hydrothermaux s'échappent à plus de 300°C, chargés en métaux qu'ils ont lessivés dans les roches traversées en profondeur. Comment se forment ces fluides chauds? L'énergie extraite correspond au refroidissement de plus de 200m3 de magma par heure. Le système hydrothermal est il en train de refroidir la chambre magmatique du volcan? Et dans ce cas doit on s'attendre à voir diminuer la température et le flux des fluides? Ou bien cette chambre est elle régulièrement réalimentée par du nouveau magma? Et quelle est la relation qui s'établit en profondeur entre la source de chaleur magmatique, la perméabilité créé par les failles et les fractures nombreuses en frontière de plaque, et le système hydrothermal ?

Pour répondre à ces questions nous opérons depuis dix ans un réseau instrumental constitué de 5 sismomètres, de sondes de pression (pour mesurer les éventuels gonflements du volcan sous l'influx de nouveau magma), et de sondes de température dans plus de 15 fumeurs. Nous avons déjà montré que la sismicité est probablement maximale là où les fluides extraient le plus de chaleur à un moment donné: les roches se fracturent en effet à cause du refroidissement rapide. Ces zones d'extraction maximale de chaleur sont situées environ 3 km sous sommet du volcan, et se déplacent au cours du temps, peut être en suivant les injections de magma les plus récentes, ou bien parce que des failles ont ouvert de nouveaux accès aux fluides. La température moyenne des fumeurs n'a par contre pas changé sur les 10 ans d'observation; à cette échelle de temps, l'activité du système hydrothermal reste donc stable. Pour mieux interpréter ces données, nous formulons des hypothèses (sur la structure de perméabilité du volcan, sur la localisation et le volume des injections magmatiques ...) que nous testons avec des modèles numériques;

plus chauds ils sont aussi moins denses et remontent donc pour former les évents du champ hydrothermal.
